Why convert PNG to WebP

PNG is a lossless format, which is ideal for editing but expensive for the web: a screenshot or product photo saved as PNG can weigh several megabytes. WebP was designed by Google specifically for web images. Its lossy mode keeps an alpha channel, something JPG cannot do, so it can replace PNG for transparent images while using a fraction of the bytes. Smaller images mean faster page loads and better Core Web Vitals scores.

Choosing a quality

The slider sets how much detail WebP may discard. Photos and illustrations with soft gradients look fine at 70–80. Images with sharp text, thin lines or flat UI elements can show faint smudging around edges at low settings, so use 85–90 for screenshots and diagrams. Moving the slider re-converts the whole batch so you can compare sizes immediately.

If a simple graphic, such as a logo with a few flat colors, comes out larger as WebP, keep it as PNG. PNG’s compression is very effective for that kind of image.

Transparency and resizing

Transparent backgrounds are preserved. The alpha channel is encoded at full quality even when the color data is compressed, so cut-out edges stay clean. To produce web-sized images in one step, enter a maximum width (for example 1600 pixels): larger images are scaled down with a Lanczos filter, smaller ones are left alone.

All of this happens in your browser with a WebAssembly build of libwebp. Your files are not uploaded anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my images get?

It depends on the content. PNG photos and detailed artwork often shrink by 70% or more. Simple graphics with few colors are already efficient as PNG and may shrink much less, or even grow; the list shows the exact result for each file.

Does WebP keep the transparent background?

Yes. The alpha channel is stored at full quality, so transparent and semi-transparent edges look the same as in the PNG.

Is the conversion lossless?

No, this tool uses lossy WebP, which is what makes the files so much smaller. At quality 80 and above the difference is very hard to see. If you need pixel-perfect output, keep the PNG.

Can every browser show WebP?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP. Safari has supported it since version 14 (2020) and needs macOS Big Sur or later to show it.
